Josh Rachlis: I went to @ontariosciencecentre yesterday to watch the eclipse, and a staff guy gave me the special glasses to look at the eclipse for a second. (See the moment in the Instagram Story I'll post at http://ift.tt/2fCIaz6 and http://youtube.com/joshrachlis). And then I gave them back and took this photo where I'm pretending I burned my eyes. Haha! But now I'm wondering if maybe I really did damage my eyes. And for what? Two seconds of looking at a round shadow on a bright ball of fire? I threw away decades of meticulously protecting my eyes with sunglassses, all for two seconds of nothing? I didn't even care about the eclipse in the first place, plus I was coming down with a cold, but I let the media hype convince me to take public transit to this event. Oh, and afterward I saw a sign saying "Wear protective glasses. Or, even safer, don't look directly and use a pinhole camera." Even safer?! So it's not completely safe to use those glasses they were passing around? So you're taking a chance of permanent eye damage to look at something that looks like absolutely nothing?! If I survive this, I'm not falling for media hype any more. I don't care about sports, so I'm not watching the Olympics or a Blue Jays playoff game. I'm not freezing my butt at Nathan Phillips Square to watch New Year's Eve fireworks. I'm staying home and making songs and videos and cartoons - The stuff I actually enjoy and which will help build the life I want. I remember discovering in university that I was a lot happier when I stayed in the dorm and recorded a song with my friends in the bathroom (for the acoustics) than when I went to pub night to try to meet girls. Even though pub was supposedly the place to be. No more FOMO (Fear of missing out).
