On Wed, after my audition, I walked down King, saw a couch in @designwithinreach window, went in to admire it. Salesgirl came over and mentioned @hermanmiller office chairs are on sale. I said I've been thinking of getting a chair for my new studio. So I checked out all the chairs. Not that I should be spending almost $2000 on a chair. When I got home Tuesday, I spotted an Ernie doll on the ground outside my condo. I thought that was so sad! So I stopped to take a photo. The condo concierge came out to see what I was doing and said: "Josh, are you ok? It looked like you were limping." Well, I always look like I'm limping. So I told him I was ok and just taking a pic of Ernie. The concierge said a bunch of people had taken pics of Ernie. I guess I'm glad I'm not the only person who felt bad for Ernie. Sunday, April 23: I subwayed up to @cffairviewmall, hoping a nearby friend would drive me to @walmartcanada to get a rug for my new studio. But she didn't get back to me until the mall was almost closed. Sat April 22: With my acoustic panels installed, I decided to get a "ring light" for filming my http://youtube.com/joshrachlis videos. I researched all the online and local stores, and wound up visiting this place in an old warehouse building. The owner let me put my iPhone in the ring light to test it out. At the start here, I was explaining that I film with the rear lens because it's bigger, but that means I can't see myself, so I use a mirror behind the phone to see if I'm in frame. (Clint assumed I'd be filming with the selfie lens so I could see myself.) I didn't buy the light right away. I continue to research it online and in stores for a few more days. I researched all the online and local stores, and wound up visiting this place in an old warehouse building. While talking to Clint, the owner, I mentioned I've been trying to figure out how to mesh good audio from my XLR mic with good video, and he told me there is such a thing as an XLR adapter cord where you can plug an XLR mic into your iPhone or camcorder. I've been trying to figure out if that was possible for months. And nobody has said it's possible. But Clint has an adapter cord and he let me try it out with his mic. It worked! (Caveat: A few days later I was at @vistek doing some extra research on ring lights and I noticed XLR adapter cables but then I talked to the staff and we figured out that the mic I use for voice acting needs my USB interface.) I love learning about how I can improve my voice acting and YouTubing! Maybe I should make videos explaining what I've learned. On Friday, April 21, this guy (in rasta hat) came to install the acoustic panels I hired him to make for my new home studio. That's his high school buddy who came to help him. THE STORY: A couple of months ago I decided to turn my second bedroom into an echo-free space to make my voice acting easier and better. (And at some point it occured to me that this could improve my YouTubing too.) I researched every possible acoustic treatment option (egg crates on the wall, foam squares on the wall, just stand-up panels) and decided to hire this guy to make me panels for the walls and ceiling, plus free-standing panels. And tada - The room looks and sounds amazing! Sadly, the day they came, I woke up with a bad cold and I was in my bathroom sneezing the whole time they were here. (Serves me right for going to that webseries party the night before. I always get sick from eating food that's sitting out where germs can get on it and from shaking hands with people.) So I didn't get to help them and learn about the process and film it. But hopefully they'll come back so I can interview them in the studio about the studio. Before they arrived, I did manage to move the bed out of the room. The bed is now on its side in my dining area. When did you last get a hug from a restaurant owner? You don't get that from large chains. The story: I got a ride from Ottawa to Toronto with @superstarr_sammy and his 5-year-old son Zach today. Before leaving Ottawa, Sammy wanted to stop at Di Rienzo's, which Sammy has been going to since he was a kid. I asked Paul the owner what the best sandwich was and he said he would make me a special combo. On Saturday, my sister @dianarachlis wanted me to film her reading a speech she wrote about how she stays positive with Parkinson's disease. I realized I'd forgotten in Toronto the clip to attach my microphone to my little microphone stand. So I improvised my taping it to an ashtray that my dad uses as a candy holder. Then I got a box of bags, and put a popcorn maker on it, and put a Leonard Cohen CD on that as a platform for my iPhone tripod. Yesterday my parents drove me to my friend Christine's place in Kemptville to pick up her @bell pvr hard drive. She happened to record the @ctv_television interview I did about my Elizabeth May song a few years ago and it's the only copy that exists and I'm going to try recording it off her drive at a store. She also recorded my Come Date With Me Canada episode. So I'll get a file of that too. Because the show won't give me a copy. Yesterday my parents and I ate at @awcanada. My mom was impressed with their glass mugs and ceramic tea cups. She said they're really trying. But I have a question. At this Ottawa location, you have it right - A blue box in the Recycling section, and newspapers on the plastic divider. But at the John and Mercer location by my condo in Toronto, they put that newspaper holder under the recycling sign. That never made sense to me. Maybe this Ottawa location serves some recyclable packaging and the Toronto one doesn't? My #cartoon of our @tuttifruttidejeuner #server, @kayleymorris! π The story: My sis Diana wanted to go to #tuttifruttidejeuner. They have a lot of gluten-free options for her. When the bill came, my dad said the name on it was Kayley. I figured I'd draw a cartoon of myself, thanking Kayley for her service. She came back with the machine and said she needed to see the bill, to input the amount. I showed her the bill, and explained I was drawing a cartoon. On the fly, I said I was drawing a cartoon... of HER, cuz that seemed more personal. Even though it was a small receipt, so room would be tight. My pen wasn't writing on the glossy paper. She suggested I draw on the placement. So I switched to that. When I was done, my dad and sis were in the car. I needed to get a selfie with the waitress and the cartoon. But I wanted to pee first. So I hid the cartoon over by the wall where I was charging my phone, so that she wouldn't just take the cartoon while I was gone. While I was in the washroom, from the car my dad and sis saw the waitress go to the table and flip the placemats looking for the cartoon, and she seemed sad not to find it. My dad had seen me place something by the wall. My sis ran in to tell the waitress the cartoon was there. When I returned from the washroom, my sis and waitress were with the cartoon. Then I finally took a selfie of her with the placement. Then I took a pic of just the cartoon, with the unfinished receipt cartoon as well, because it was part of the story. Then Kayley said she should have held the receipt in the photo too, so we retook the selfie. I told her to follow me on Instagram, and today she did!
